Student Life

Anyone who learns and studies also requires recreation, relaxation, and creative exchange: there are many possibilities on and around the campus to take part in activities alone or with others, in addition to lectures and study work. The RUB makes this possible in many different ways: artistic development in the Centre for Arts and Music, physical activity with university sports, or inspiration in the Botanical Gardens. The culture initiative, boSKop, the ASta, and various other student initiatives organize concerts, stage performances, festivals, and faculty parties that draw attention with colorful posters and creative mottos.

Within the city center of Bochum, you can dive into the famous Bermuda-Triangle (Dreieck) with its many bars, pubs and restaurants, go dancing in the clubs, and reflect in the theater – the possibilities here in the heart of the Ruhr region are serious competition for your course schedule!

Living expenses

Approximately +/- 700 Euros per month are sufficient for living, including rent for accommodation, health insurance and expenses for food (for example in the canteen and cafeterias on campus), books and other study materials.
Furthermore, you need to pay an enrollment fee every semester of about 260 Euros. This compulsory payment also covers state-wide public transport in North Rhine-Westphalia and entitles students to reduced rates in museums, theaters and other institutions.

Accommodation

The AKAFOE, the academic office of support and the representation of students, provides accommodation for students. There are 18 student halls of residence in Bochum. The waiting list for accommodation may be between 3 to 6 months long. Therefore it is highly recommended that you apply for a room before moving to Bochum or leaving for Germany. Please refer to the RUB’s International Office (http://international.rub.de/bewerbung/zugelassen/wohnen.html.en) or visit the AKAFOE website for further information http://www.akafoe.de/wohnen/index-lang-en.html.

University sports

University sports Bochum is the biggest social facility at RUB, organizing more than 150 courses in roundabout 45 different sports disciplines. Students can choose from sports activities as diverse as Aerobics, Basketball, Rugby, Swimming, Weight Training or Zumba – be sure that there is at least one sports activity that suits your talent and interest! You can book all courses online. Registration is necessary to provide for ideal course sizes. For more information on the different courses and the booking procedure, please visit http://www.hochschulsport-bochum.de/hochschulsport/siteactive.html.en.

Health insurance

All students have to arrange their own health insurance. Adequate coverage for medical costs is essential, and it is a requirement for obtaining a Residence Permit (which you need if you stay longer than two months). Your health insurance should cover the entire period of stay. Proof of valid health insurance is also necessary to extend your visa. For further information, visit http://international.rub.de/bewerbung/zugelassen/index.html.en.

Visa and entry regulations

If you require a visa as a non-EU citizen, you must apply for this at the German Embassy or German Consulate in your home country. Please apply for your visa as soon as you receive the letter confirming your admission.

RUB International Office and RUBiss, the RUB international student services

The International Office at Ruhr-University Bochum (http://international.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/index.html.en) is an excellent contact point for all inquiries, special needs and interests of international students in Bochum.
