Scents rule the world

Some scents attract and bewitch – others beguile or deceive. Our nose co-determines if we like someone or not. The scent exhibition in the Botanic Garden of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum invites you to an unusual and interactive expedition into a world full of secret scents. Test your nose and get to know the scents that change your life. Learn a lot about medicinal and culinary herbs and perfumes.

Europe’s biggest scent exhibition presents itself interactively and in German, Italian, and English (legends and audio guide). The tour leads through six rooms – from the entrée via the conservatory, the two savanna houses and the tropical greenhouse to the flacon.

Exhibition and programme

Learn about the cultural history of scents, chemical structure of scent groups, perfumes, aroma therapy as well as distillation, and other forms of conservation of scents. Coming from the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle (Meran, Italy) where it was designed, the exhibition in Bochum is accompanied by many events and special features.

Every last Sunday of each month there is a public lecture on a smell-related topic from different scientific angles. Each weekend at 11am and 2pm there are free guided tours (in German) through the exhibition.

The Botanic Garden is open daily from 9am to 6pm.
