The Ruhr University Bochum, founded in 1962, has obtained the reputation of a great traditional academic institution without loosing the pioneering spirit and dynamics of a new enterprise.

The university serves more than 35.000 students. There are opportunities for education and research from a wide range of subjects ranging from art and humanities and medicine to natural sciences and engineering. Over 3.000 foreign students and 21 partnerships with institutes of higher education around the world give the Ruhr University its cosmopolitan and international character. Student apartments are located in the vicinity of the Ruhr University. The International Relations Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) provides information and assistance concerning living arrangements. Next to the University there are shops and restaurants. The city of Bochum can be reached within 8 minutes by subway from the campus station.

The Ruhr University has a number of facilities which are available to all members. These include the University Library and sports facilities. The Botanical Garden offers an oasis for relaxation.

The Internatonal Relations Office conducts further activities intended to help foreign students get started in Bochum. These include cultural events, excursions and workshops which adress student and social life.
