UWE Conference 2006 in Den Haag

This year's UWE conference, which was simultaneously the 25th anniversary of the organisation, took place in The Hague from September 26th to 30th. Its motto was Peace and Power - the peace-building and empowerment role of university women of Europe. Three members of BoNetzMentoring (Eva Nagel, Sandra Zeidler and Janina Zerbock) participated in the conference and organized together with the young members of the Dutch VVAO the young members workshop. This workshop had been prepared in two meetings with the young members from the VVAO in Arnhem and Bochum.
Our young members workshop was a debate on the controversial and current topic Female academics need quota to increase their job and career opportunities. In the first part the participants were divided into a pro, contra and jury group. While the pro and contra groups had to find arguments in favour of and against the above statement, the jury group had to rate the arguments according to their strength afterwards. Finally we had a plenum discussion on the most crucial aspects of the first part. The aim of the workshop was not only to present one's own opinion but to find arguments from a different point of view and thus broaden one's perspective.
The workshop was a great success; the discussion among the participants was very lively. We also had the chance to present our results to all participants of the conference at the celebration dinner.

Finally we would like to thank the young members from the VVAO very much for their warm welcome, that we could stay at one of their houses and for their active participation in preparing and organizing the workshop. We are very happy that we will continue our cooperation with the young members of the VVAO. At the IFUW conference in Manchester in August 2007 we will do the workshop again, either have a deeper look into the subject already discussed or take another topic relevant for academic women in a globalised world and discuss it in the same manner.
We invite all DAB young members to actively participate in organising the workshop before and in Manchester. If you are interested, please do not hesitate to write us an email.
