Established in 1962, the RUB was the first new university founded in
the Federal Republic of Germany.
Today more than 37.000 students study and 6.000 members of staff including almost 500 professors work at the university, making it to the third biggest university in Germany. With it's large course offering, the RUB's one of the most diversified of German universities. 20 Faculties offer about 100 subjects in the natural and engineering sciences as well as humanities and medicine. |
Starting points for further information:
Build in the 1960's, the architecture of the RUB reflects the 'concrete is wonderful'-style of that time. Therefore, you need a little time to get used to the looks of the campus and to discover the advantages of the practical architecture with it's the short ways to other faculties or central institutions. Nevertheless, there are surly some nice places on campus, not only because of its location on the green hills over the river Ruhr.
Some pictures of the RUB:
The
RUB is located in Bochum, a city with 400,000 inhabitants in the middle
of the Ruhr-Area, the industrial heart of Germany. Although having a town
charter since 1321, the rise of Bochum began with the boom in the coal
and steel industries of the last century. With the closure of the last
coal mine in the 1970's, Bochum had gone through a rough structural change,
leading for example to the settlement of a car manufacturing plant, and
- of course - the Ruhr-University.
Bochum offers a widespread range of cultural activities: Theater, symphonic
orchestra, musical, planetary or museums. At night, you can choose between
the numerous student bars, clubs or the Bermuda Dreieck (Bermuda
triangle), an area covered with all kinds of bars (almost like 6th
street in Austin), forming one huge beer garden in summer.
