overview of the focal point Programme "biomolecular and Biomedical chemistry"
The Biomolecular and Biomedical Chemistry specialization provides molecular-level insights into biomolecular processes and equips students with the knowledge and skills to analyze, manipulate, and control these processes in a targeted manner. The program focuses on the structure and function of biological macromolecules, which play essential roles in physiology and the development of diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders and cancer.
Students gain hands-on experience with a comprehensive range of modern experimental techniques, including molecular cloning, protein expression and purification, crystallization, structure determination, as well as functional, biophysical, and spectroscopic analyses at the molecular level. In parallel, biological function is investigated across multiple levels of organization, from the integration of biomolecules into cellular metabolism using proteomic, cell biological, and biochemical approaches to the elucidation of reaction mechanisms through advanced spectroscopic methods.
A strong emphasis is placed on biomedical applications, including the discovery and development of novel therapeutic agents, the rational engineering of therapeutic targets, and the optimization of biologics and diagnostic tools. By integrating expertise in synthesis, analytical methods and spectroscopy, as well as theory and simulation, the specialization offers students a broad, research-driven, and application-oriented education, preparing them for careers in biomedical research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and related scientific fields.
