1) RUB50 - The Search for historical objects connected to the Ruhr-Universität

The Ruhr-Universität will be 50 in 2015 – a reason to look back and celebrate! Preparations for the festivities have, of course, long since begun. Among other things, there will be an exhibition on the topic of “The History of the Ruhr-Universität”; we are still looking for exhibits connected to the RUB dated from 1965 until today.
Do you still have interesting objects or documents from your time at the university that tell a special RUB story of their own? Would you be prepared to donate or loan the article to the Ruhr-Universität Archives?
These are the kinds of things we are looking for:

  • Collections of student publications such as flyers/brochures/ magazines from AStA, student boards and political groups
  • Records of your own AStA or student board work
  • Records of committee work in the faculties
  • Publications by faculties, lecture lists with commentaries (“Event Guides”)
  • Student passes, course record books, event and fee slips
  • Other documents, posters, photographs, audio recordings and films
  • Any other memorabilia connected with the RUB

Contact us: a brief description of the document or object and an outline of your personal connection to it will suffice to start with. Send your email to alumni@rub.de or call +49 (0)234 32-27512.
Together with Jörg Lorenz, head of the Ruhr-Universität Archives, we – and you – will decide whether your documents or objects can be used in the exhibition and/or kept in the University Archives on account of their historical significance and taking principles of preservation into account. This would make them available for future research.

2) 20 + 40 = “Silver” and “Golden” graduation anniversaries for Alumni

Are you one of the Alumni who finished studying at the Ruhr-Universität 20, or even 40, years ago? We would like to honour you at our next Academic Anniversary this coming autumn with a “silver” or “golden” degree certificate and use this auspicious occasion together with you to look back at your time at the Ruhr-Universität and your career afterwards.
So if you finished at the RUB in 1993 or 1973, log on to the RUB Alumni Network, click on “My Profile” and enter your details – only this way can we find out about you and invite you to this party!

3) RUBIN – now available in English too!

The biannual academic magazine RUBIN reports on current research from all fields at the Ruhr-Universität in layman’s terms. There is also an additional annual edition on a specialist theme.
RUBIN is now also appearing in English (once a year)! You can subscribe to the magazine free of charge as a RUB Alumni member. Write an email with your postal address to alumni@rub.de and tell us if you want to receive RUBIN in German or English.

4) New Alumni Interview

Dr Eleonore Soei-Winkels came to the Ruhr-Universität in 2005 in order to do her PhD at the International Graduate School of Neuroscience (IGSN) and the RUB Research School with an aim to becoming a professor. And because life sometimes takes unexpected turns, just like the rollercoasters she loves so much, she took a sideways turn into the IT industry after completing her PhD …

5) RUB Scholarship Fund - our Alumni scholarship recipients in 2012/13

In addition to the NRW scholarships, the Ruhr-Universität has once again been able to award “Deutschlandstipendium” scholarships to RUB students this year. All in all more than 240 scholarships were awarded. We would like to extend our warmest thanks to our Alumni; many of them took on a scholarship in pairs or even individually. The scholarship recipients and their sponsors were also able to meet their sponsors at the scholarship party in November:

The Alumni Scholarship from the RUB Scholarship Fund is made up of many small donations from former RUB members. This year’s winners were Jasmin Schabel and Raffael Beier.

6) “Wege in die Praxis” – looking for engineers among young RUB Alumni

The joint research project ELLI (Exzellentes Lehren und Lernen in den Ingenieurwissenschaften, “Excellent Teaching and Learning in Engineering”) pursues the goal of reducing the number of those who drop out of university by means of stronger identification with engineering studies and careers. Students and Alumni who studied engineering are invited to join the debate in order to illustrate the challenges of the course and possible career entries from different points of view.
On the afternoon of 26 March ELLI is hosting “Wege in die Praxis” [“Paths to Practice”]. For this event, ELLI are looking for engineering alumni who have only been in employment for a year or so and therefore still have a strong connection to student life. Would you like to pass on your experiences of working life? You can introduce yourself to the students in a brief talk, which will be followed by discussions.

7) Lecture series at the RUB – Alumni warmly invited

In lecture series, different speakers open up a multitude of points of view on a given subject; in this way, even those new to the topic in question can gain an overview of the various themes. The Ruhr-Universität organises a lot of lecture series, many of which take place at alumni-friendly times:

“#WishYouWereHere” is a series of lectures from the RUB Institute of Media Sciences. It deals with the phenomenon of social media and the digital society; it takes place in C60/Rotunda, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 3 in Bochum on Tuesdays from 6 pm.

“Hörsaal City” [“City Auditorium”] is the central lecture series at the RUB organised by the Rectorate. This semester’s main topic is “How we remember – from memory to the culture of commemoration“; lectures take place on Wednesdays at the House of Ruhr History, Clemensstraße 17-19 in Bochum, at 6 pm.

The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy will be focussing on the topic of “Experiments” in its “Saturday Morning Physics”: flashes, plasmas, nebular rings; Saturdays in the HNA Auditorium on the RUB campus at 11 am.

8) Ancient Persian art in the Campus Museum

Last year the Ruhr-Universität received an important donation of ancient Persian art: Berthold Beitz and Paul-Georg Gutermuth transferred their private collections of Persian ceramic and bronze objects to the Ancient World department of the Campus Museum. The unique artefacts come from the period between the 5th century BC and the Islamic Middle Ages.

The two collections are now on display to the public: The exhibition, “Bronze and Ceramics from Ancient Persia”, can be seen at the RUB Campus Museum.
