1) Storm in the wind tunnel – Guide for RUB Alumni at the University Summer Party on 6/6
On the day of the University Summer Party we offer RUB Alumni members a tour of the RUB wind tunnel. Here, a working group from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering examine the effect of wind on large buildings such as football stadiums, skyscrapers or cooling towers. In order to do this, true-to-scale model buildings are positioned in the wind tunnel and exposed to air currents.

After the wind tunnel tour there is a way across the campus waiting for you on which the annual University Summer Party takes place.

2) A place of wisdom – the RUB at ExtraSchicht on 30/6
This year, the Ruhr-Universität is the first university to be a venue for ExtraSchicht, the industrial heritage night in the Ruhr. ExtraSchicht presents striking places in the Ruhr and gives life to the structural change from heavy industry to business, science and culture.
Because not 100 years ago there was not a single university in the Ruhr. This was the heart of the steel industry; critical minds were undesirable. Then, after the war, a sensational new beginning was undertaken: the Ruhr-Universität was the first new university to be founded in the Federal Republic of Germany. A place of wisdom in the middle of the Ruhr. Today, the RUB is a top international research centre. And there is a lot to find out about it – especially in the night of June 30.
For more information
You will find the starting point in front of the university administration building: a RUB table with information on the offers and guided tours during this night. We from the Alumni Office are also there as a contact for you. We look forward to meeting you!

3) Alumni for Students – Share your Expertise
We are looking for Alumni with professional experience to pass on their practical knowledge to students. You can choose between single talks, supervising simulated conversations and a longer-term engagement as a mentor. Share your experiences from professional life and give students impulses for their own personal and professional development.

Do you remember your search for a suitable internship? In order to help Ruhr-Universität students better in future, the Centre for Economic Education (Zentrum für ökonomische Bildung der RUB, ZföB) offers advice and arranges internships for students of all subjects. Students can find information on this on an internship notice on an "internship offer wall" which is constantly updated. Additionally, the ZföB is currently setting up a campus-wide online internship market that offers all students a subject and occupational field-related search for high-quality offers.
Does your company offer internships that would also be interesting for RUB students? Louisa Feldmann and Antje Heinrich will be happy to receive your internship offers at praktikum@rub.de.

7) "The Hen" – contributions to the history of the RUB
The ground plan of the site the city fathers of Bochum had chosen to build the first new university in the Ruhr – and indeed the whole of Germany – looked a little like a chicken; so the planners dubbed it "The Hen". This is also the name of the new series of papers from the University archives with contributions to the history and origin of the RUB. The articles are mainly based on unpublished sources. You can download the historical documents from the internet.

8 ) Career fair "Opportunities East Asia" on June 22nd - Alumni of the Faculty of East Asian Studies are cordially welcome
"And what are you going to do with that?" is a question that most certainly has been endured by generations of students. Students of the Faculty of East Asian Studies have not been spared this question as well. Therefore on June 22nd an information and career fair for students enrolled in the subjects East Asian Economics & Politics, Sinology, Japanese Studies and Korean Studies will take place.

Getting to know alumni who graduated at their faculty is especially important for the students because this way they can obtain first-hand information about which career path the graduates chose and which experiences they have gained. Thus, the students of the Faculty of East Asian Studies sincerely invite alumni of the faculty to advice students, to participate in discussions with them or to give a talk at the "Opportunities East Asia". The student organizing committee are looking forward to questions and registrations, please write to fsr-oaw@rub.de.

9) Beckmanns Hof – The International Event Centre at the RUB has now reopened
The quaint timber-framed building in the south of the campus has been an idyllic place for meetings and events at the RUB for many years. After expensive modernisation, Beckmanns Hof can now be seen in its new, and above all completely barrier-free, glory. There is now a new hall for congresses and conferences in an extension between the historic buildings. The existing rooms have been kept and extensively renovated. The AKAFÖ restaurant has been opened here recently. You can enjoy an exquisite à la carte menu at lunchtime in the new "Restaurant im Beckmanns Hof" (we recommend reserving a table: Tel. 0234/32-11381). Come and try it!

10) The RUB has always shone – now it shines in the dark too!
A large, blue and white RUB cube has been on display on the Ruhr-Universität Centre of Fine Arts since February. The sign is visible from a long way away and when it is dark it lights up. The illumination is the first step towards the design of an entrance to the RUB that will welcome visitors. The legend belonging to it, "Ruhr-Universität Bochum", will soon be set up opposite the Centre of Fine Arts, on the university administration building.

11) Memory research at the RUB – Summer School in Neuroscience 2011
What happens in the brain when we forget? How does an MRI work? What methods do we use to find out what happens inside nerve cells? Searching for answers to these questions, 30 students from all over Europe came to the RUB for the first Summer School in Neuroscience from the European Campus of Excellence last September. They spent three weeks researching the fate of the memory trace. You can read about the fascinating experiences they had in the Ruhr and their discoveries about learning, remembering and forgetting in the English language brochure, "The Fate of the Memory Trace". We will be pleased to send you a copy free of charge; please write to alumni@rub.de

12) "Technological Early Detection in Industrial Company Networks": a study
Martina Frießem is a research assistant at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the RUB Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (Prof. Zülch). In her study, she investigates the success drivers of technological early detection in company networks: the recognition of weak signals that indicate the potentials of new technologies can lead to a crucial competitive edge. But this is exactly the challenge: this early detection and correct interpretation of these signals. Take part in Martina Frießem’s survey and you will then receive the results of her study:
