Dorothee Dzwonnek

General Secretary of the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG)

Dorothee Dzwonnek studied law at the Ruhr-Universität and did her second state examination in 1986. She held several positions afterwards in which she always remained closely connected to the themes of academia and research, for instance as Chancellor of the University of Dortmund and also during her time at the Ministry of Schools, Academia and Research of the State of NRW. Today, Dorothee Dzwonnek is General Secretary of the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG), and since 2008, as a member of the RUB University Council, she has been playing a major part in their destiny.

[I miss] the wonderful carefree way you could live and still study.

When I look back at my time at the RUB, I especially miss…
... the wonderful carefree way you could live and still study. Without compulsory seminars and study planning prescribed down to the last day, so that you could have the odd lie-in and still attain your goal.

I still have one thing in my possession from my time as a student, and that is…
… the scribbled notes I used to prepare myself for my finals.

I can remember the following anecdote from my time as a student …
… there was a running gag in nearly every lecture: the teachers asked "the young blonde lady at the back on the left" to go into the problem being discussed in detail.

My time at the RUB means for me …
My degree was the basis of my professional career and, through the influential encounter with Prof. Paul Mikat, communicated to me access to the foundations and unshakeable principles of academic working methods and a universal overview.
